Image Series and Video Clips Part 3: Main Event of the Evening
This video shows the main event of the April 12th Thingyan 2013 fightnight in Thaton: a relentless battle between Thabyay Nyo, Lightwelterweight Interstate Division Champion (64kg) from Cement Factory Gym Hpa An, and his opponent Lone Chaw Lay. The video starts with the hard-hitting end of round two and finishes with the final knockout in round five of the bout.
As one can see in the video, in these kinds of regional events the breaks between the rounds can take up to more than 3 minutes (the breaks shown in the video are shortened already), as the organizers seem to put their focus more on a dynamic flow of action in the ring rather than on strict compliance of the official rules.
Another strange peculiarity of this event was the fact that the ring floor was not covered with canvas as it is usual, but with an impermeable plastic sheeting, which resulted in a slippery mixture of sweat, dirt and water that let the fighters slip and fall much more than once in a round.
Thabyay Nyo eventually won the bout by K.O. at the end of round 5 and earned the winner’s prize money of 700.000 Kyats (app. 700 US$). But also Lone Chaw Lay didn’t have to leave empty-handed: as he was a fierce opponent up to the bitter end of the battle, he earned a competitor’s reward of 500.000 Kyats.
The image series downward was captured in round 1 & 2, before and after the fight.
